The Peter Burr House - ca. 1751, oldest wood frame home in West Virginia
Reliving History, Inc.

...is a small but growing group of local citizens (in Jefferson County, WV) and descendants of Peter Burr (from nationwide). Peter Burr built his home west of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Virginia Colony ca. 1751. This was prior to the French and Indian War or the American Revolutionary War. The house, made only of wood harvested from his property, still stands and is the oldest wooden house in the state of West Virginia. Enlarged twice by the early 1800s, the house today stands structurally unchanged for almost 200 years. The family and the local community seek to help the house come alive to tell its story through the eyes of those who saw history in the making.

The Peter Burr House is now owned and preserved by the Jefferson County Historic Landmarks Commission as a treasured jewel that bears witness to American heritage where neighbors helped neighbors, and somehow the result was survival against many odds.

Directions:
Use online maps (or the one below) to get into the Burr Industrial Park where the Peter Burr House will be found in the back of the park. This entrance is a few hundred yards south of the Department of Motor Vehicles. Entrance into the industrial park is at the top of a hill beside Shamrock Lighting on the corner of Old Charles Town Road and East Burr Boulevard. The map below will get you to this point. However the star marker in MapQuest (map below) is not correct. Inside Burr Industrial Par, drive past the area shown by the red star and continue all the way to the end of the road and into the parking area of the last strip of businesses. In the parking area, turn right and continue off the pavement onto the rock road. The house will be ahead of you. Park in the grass.
